Data Protection
Consent Overlays do not only block cookies but external services themselves.
There is no connection to any third-party servers unless the user has given his consent to load the service.
Setup
Data protection can be set up for each service separately. To enable data protection for a service:
- Go to YOOtheme Pro → Corporate Tools → Consent Tools → Consent Overlay → [Your Service] → Content.
- Set Data Protection to
With mandatory consent
. - If applicable, go to Advanced tab and enable the Integrations you use.
- If applicable, go to Advanced tab and enable Google Consent Mode if needed.
Data Protection when using Consent Management Platforms
Even though some Consent Management Platforms (CMP) have their own data protection features, the controlling of data protection for your services always remains here. Further settings, that you do inside a CMP, will always be additional and won't replace the settings you have made here.
Concept
Block services instead of cookies
We believe that blocking third-party technologies has some great advantages over just blocking cookies.
- There is no data transmission to third-party servers until the user has given consent.
- In terms of conversion marketing, it takes a user less effort to accept a particular service than a particular cookie.
- Determining and categorizing services is easier than determining and categorizing cookies.
Overall, it takes less time and knowledge for the setup, provides real data protection and may be easier to handle for your clients.
Local Consent Storage
One principle of GDPR is to limit the collection of personal data to what is really necessary in order to accomplish a purpose. The purpose of this tool is to enable and disable external services based on the visitor's decision.
Hence, this tool just saves the consent status in the browser's LocalStorage. This is done for each service. Downside is that consent decisions are not stored for documentation purposes.
Consent documentation with Usercentrics
If you need to store consent decisions securely for documentation purposes, you can extend Consent Overlays with Usercentrics' Consent Management Platform.
Proxy Data Processing
When requesting a thumbnail for map or video content, a connection to an API will be established and personal data will be transmitted. If you asked a website visitor to make such a request, this would violate the GDPR.
To prevent such violations, our consent tool will process thumbnails by proxy. It listens to your visitors, fetches the requested thumbnails from an API and delivers them to your visitors. Thus, your visitors will only connect to your own website and no third-party servers.
Limitations
Consent Overlays do not store consent decisions for documentation purposes.
However, if you need to store consents securely, you can extend Consent Overlays with Usercentrics' Consent Management Platform.
Consent Overlays assist you in technically complying with the GDPR. They do not excuse you from creating a correct privacy policy with individual legal support.
As a site owner, you are fully responsible for the technical and legal implementation of your data protection strategy.
